Welcome, and thank you for visiting me. My name is Pablo Briand and I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As you know, we are, almost all of us, ancestors' orphans...And that's why the genealogy. The search for an identity. That reference that defines us. Sure? How much do we have of our great-grandparents? A 12.5% of each one of them. And how much of our great-great- grandparents? Just a 6.25% of each one of our 16 great-great-grandparents. What remains, then? Well, perhaps, in this shy 6% is laying our eyes' color, our hair color or our nose's shape. Or maybe searching for ancestors we are looking for prestige, lineage? The ancient Romans, who inherited almost everything from the Greeks, used to render a real cult to their ancestors. The one who had it, was a patrician, and who didn't, a plebeian. But, let's not lie to ourselves: we are the important as individuals. Hopefully we would be that illustrious reference for our descendants. So, what lineage did the great names in the History have? They gave a lineage to their predecessors... But, if at last, we are all more or less siblings, descendents from a group of around 10,000 nomads who populated Eastern Africa and were spread all throughout the planet. Then, why this passion for an identity? Why the search for ancestors? I look at all these faces, looking at me from those old photographs, and I can't avoid but to feel a warm affection. Maybe because for our self-knowledge, to can identify with ourselves, we need to belong. To a group, to a family, to all who stayed here, leaving us their genes. And, simultaneously, we need that they belong to us. They are my great-grandparents, my great-great-grandparents....mine, ours. Our Briand family. |
